Book Week 2016 - Australia! Story Country

Xavier Catholic College will celebrate National Book Week from Monday 22nd to Friday 26th August 2016. The theme this year is “AUSTRALIA! STORY COUNTRY.”  During Book Week, we aim to promote a love and enjoyment of reading. To make this possible, students from the Junior School will participate in a variety of events. The following is a list of Book Week activities and events that you may wish to add to your calendar. Don’t forget to come and see our fantastic door displays. They will be ready for viewing on Friday 19th August.

•    Monday 22nd August (9:30 to 10:30) – Rug Reading
Students from Prep to Year 6 will be involved in this event. All junior school students will be divided into small groups.  They will listen to stories read and prepared for by the Year 6 students, whilst seated on a rug outside on the netball courts. We will have 5, eight-minute rotations for this activity.

•    Tuesday 23rd August (6:00 to 6:45 pm) “The Joy of Reading with your child” – Prep and Year 1 parents are invited to come to the library for an information session presented by various Xavier teachers. The emphasis will be on sharing strategies that parents can use to make reading both a rewarding and an enjoyable experience for both children and parents.

•    Wednesday 24th August – Prep to Yr. 3 Family Reading Night (6 to 7:00pm) The emphasis on the night will be on families sitting together and listening to and enjoying the power of stories. Children and parents are invited to come to the library in their pyjamas (optional for parents) and sit together while stories are being told. We will have volunteer teaching staff reading to the children. Five reading locations will be used in the library that night. Readers will rotate. Parents are asked to sit with their children. Pillows and perhaps a special ‘Teddy Bear’ can be brought in to make sitting a little more comfortable.

•    Thursday 25th August - Aunty Jan Williams (who is a local Butchulla Elder) will be telling stories to Junior students in the library during the day.

•    Friday 26th August – Book Week Parade (9:00 to 10:30) – Venue GOA
All Junior School Students will come to school dressed up as their favourite book character. They can also bring their favourite book to school with them. Students will move to GOA where we will have a BIG BOOK parade.  Each class will parade down the centre of GOA to exciting music and a related story.  Parents are encouraged to attend this event. We will have some Lucky Draw Prizes for children who have dressed up and one name per year level will pulled from a hat. There will be ‘NO’ best costume awards. This is in line with our focus … ‘Celebrating Reading!!!’
