 French Trip 2017

In April next year, 20 students and staff will be embarking on a French trip to enhance their French skills. One of the very important days on our itinerary is the full day visit to the Somme and specifically Villers-Bretonneux. Why?  The inclusion of Villers-Bretonneux in the itinerary is specifically to increase awareness, foster and develop understanding for the extent of the Australian involvement in WW1 and especially our relationship with the communities in and around Villers-Bretonneux.

Visiting this very special region would also provide our students with the opportunity to see the impact that Australia and the Australians had and continue to have on these French communities during WW1 and to the present day. This very close relationship is exemplified throughout Villers-Bretonneux with the Australian names for their streets, the very visible and sincere murals regarding Australia at The Australian School and its Franco-Australian museum. This is even further accentuated at the Australian War Memorial just outside Villers-Bretonneux. Other notable sites to be visited are La Boiselle, Thiepval and Beaumont-Hamel.

This kind of an excursion can be quite costly so our College, through the French department  applied to the RSL for assistance to subsidise this excursion through their grants committee. The generosity of this organisation has been outstanding. We thank them and particularly, Sarah Bailey (Community Engagement Officer) wholeheartedly for their support in making this very relevant and worthwhile part of our trip a reality. Their very generous donation of $2500 will subsidise the cost of transportation to and from the Somme area.
