Opti-MINDS Success for Xavier Catholic College

On Saturday 24th August, two teams of students attended the Opti-MINDS Challenge for 2013 at Shalom College in Bundaberg. Amazingly, both teams achieved recognition for presentations that were the result of six weeks of effective preparation, group cohesion and problem-solving skills by winning the Wide Bay Regional Challenge for the Social Sciences and the Science and Engineering categories.

The winning Xavier Social Sciences team included five students; Olivia Ordorico, Patrick Donnelly, Madison Piddington, Georgia Anderson and Rebecca Thorogood who wrote a wonderful script based around the idea that all the computers around the world crash and ALL TELECOMUNICATION SYSTEMS ARE LOST!

The successful Science and Engineering team created a tower that had to withstand three strikes from a pendulum. Their team was made up of a mixture of Year 8 and Year 9 boys including;  Kiel Baumanis, Declan Fowler, Jeremy Hinton and Winstern Beni. The team also won the Spirit of Optiminds award for their team work and innovative ideas.

Both teams succeeded in being selected to represent the Wide Bay Region for the Opti-MINDS Creative Sustainability Challenge. The teams impressed the judges and found the experience to be an inspiring, exciting and worthwhile. As regional winners, the team are invited to contest the State Final in at the University of Queensland in Brisbane on the weekend of 12th and 13th October .

I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate both teams on a magnificent performance on the day. They were a credit to Xavier Catholic College and their families. Also, a big thank you to Jo Kliendienst (Social Science Team’s Coach) and to the parents for providing transport and supporting their children on the day.  We look forward to the next challenge.
