Rostrum Voice of Youth 2016 State Finalist

Xavier Catholic College was very well represented at the 2016 Rostrum Voice of Youth Competition. This well regarded competition fosters confidence, leadership and personal growth in young people. Over 3000 students compete in Rostrum Voice of Youth each year, covering over 500 schools. This year our very talented speakers included Alexandria Pronk, Connor Geldard and Naomi Shanahan- Giaquinto. They encountered some tough competition from Bundaberg SHS, Aldridge SHS, St Mary’s, St Luke’s Anglican College and Rockhampton Grammar. All of our students are to be commended for their excellent representation of our school both in terms of their polished delivery and interesting well-prepared speeches and in their demonstration of courtesy, friendliness and confidence. Both Connor and Naomi made it through to the Regional Finals. At this next round Connor impressed the judges, particularly with his impromptu speech, and was named as the Reserve for the Junior State Finals. Naomi’s inspirational speech “Breaking the Mould” won over the judges and she was awarded first place in the Senior Round. Naomi was awarded a cash prize as well as plane tickets to compete in the State Finals at St Joseph’s College in Brisbane on 2nd July. Although she did not make it to the National Finals, Naomi said she had an “outstanding time” and added, “it's worth every second”. A big congratulations to Naomi, Connor and Alexandria for their outstanding efforts in public speaking this year.
