On Saturday, 3rd March 2012, Xavier Catholic College student Laura McMahon (Year 12) was named the Zone Final Winner of the Lions Youth of the Year quest. She proudly shared this title with Jessica Dippel from Maryborough State High School. Together, Laura and Jessica will go on to represent the Fraser Lions Club at the Regional Final to be held in Bundaberg on Saturday 10th March, 2012.
Each year the Lions provide an opportunity for secondary school students to participate in the Lions Youth of the Year quest. The competition is intended to select the high achieving students from schools and, through a series of interviews and public speaking events, eventually select a winner from each state. State winners then participate in a national final at the Lions National Convention held in April/May of each year.
Laura was one of seven competitors to compete in this year’s Zone Final. Competitors were required to sit an interview and present a five minute prepared speech. In addition to this, contestants were required to speak for 2 minutes on two impromptu topics:
· If you visited a 3rd world country like South Africa, what could you learn from their youth?
· What could volunteer organisations do to entice youth to participate?
Laura excelled in all parts of the competition however she felt most confident with her prepared speech thanks in part to her success in debating competitions and being named Overall Winner and Public Speaker Winner at the Lion’s local Hervey Bay competition held recently.
We wish Laura and Jessica all the best for the Regional Final.
